I have a quest gps can I hook it into my laptop whilst traveling and use oziexplorer software or do I just get an external antena to plug into the laptop?

Apparently the Quest does not support the NMEA protocol or Garmin PVT, so will not interface with a computer for moving map navigation.
Have a look in the GPSA shop (http://www.gpsaustralia.net/shop/) - you can get a USB gps for around $90 that will do the job for you.

This is an external antenna/amplifier for a GPS, but not a GPS itself.

Yes, that would do the job. As would this one (https://www.gpsaustralia.net/shop/product_info.php?cPath=73&products_id=161&osCsid=e2efbd11ab1675feee17bb8ea619dc9a)

The Garmin Quest works fine with both Garmin MapSource City Navigator or OziExplorer in moving map mode

I'll trust you on that one. I downloaded the manual and googled for a while, but couldn't find any reference to it outputting position data. Garmin's documentation seemed to say that the USB interface was for updating maps and firmware, but it sounds like you've actually used one. Sorry for the bum steer kingchevy :o
