Hi
as far as commercial products go you will need the original DiscoverAus Streets and Tracks V1 disc...or the even older state by state discs. These occasionally pop up on eBay ...though I havent been looking lately. There are some custom made maps here made from OSM data but coverage is incomplete...

http://maps.festy.org/downloads/magellan/meridian/

Copy these to the detailed map directory on your SD card...the yellow meridians had SD cards ..didnt they? Cant remember.

...woops forgot about that option. For some reason I was thinking the base model Meridian didnt have a SD card slot...but then thought it did..Lost my mind.

....only the Street Nav units come with pre-installed detailed mapping (of towns) at under $300. You will not get a garmin or magellan handheld with preinstalled detailed mapping for, at a guess, under $500. i.e. even if you bought a more current handheld you will still have to fork out similar amount.

What type/size SD card ? - suspect you will be limited to using at most a 256mb size non HC type SD card.
