According to Garmin they are IPX-7:

a bit more on IPX-7 from Garmin:

I know with my etrex I rinsed it under the tap a couple of times. With the 60CS I got caught out in a storm while geocaching once. Both units are still working.

From all accounts reguardless of what brand , dont trust what they say . Consider using it in a zip type or purpose type plastic bag..Les

I've yet to test the Meridian, but I've seen photos of one floating in a "sink".....

The top 1/3 of the Meridian, stays above water.....and by all accounts they are very waterproof....if they have been looked after!

I have a Meridian Platinum and when I was setting up one of my caches in Merimbula near a fun park, I took it down their waterslides  a few times to see how fast I went. Around 25kmh in case you are curious.

GPS was definately waterproof. Still caching with it two years later.
