View Full Version : I've bricked my 4.3" Tevion GPS

I am not joking, Ive installed one of the MIO simple unlocks, the one SD free, from http://www.freewebs.com/xtyler91/. Each time i was restarting the gps, I had to copy some .dll files to windows directory, so i got myself nice mortscript script copping this files automatically and everything was working OK, till one day when I've decided to update my
windows ce5.0 ROM, without enough knowledge. I've installed
some 'windcar' GPS ROM update (there is a way to get to the bootloader, I won't tell you, because I don't want you to brick
your units before you make a bootable ROM backups of your devices), the problem was, that the bootloader started updating
the ROM without giving me any options and this way I've got myself new brick, with TEVION written on it.
I did dump something, which supposed to be a ROM dump from my tevion, before I started this new project, but I cannot extract anything from it or convert it back to bootable ROM, using tools available on the net.
I was wondering if someone here, has got access, has got or can get a factory ROM for TEVION 4.3" windows CE 5.0, that would be a dream.
I'll be back with some more info, because someone has dumped
something out of Navigo SY895, which looks like tevion 4.3"
Regards
John :mighty
P.S. I was wondering, if someone here is willing to dump his/her
rom, for me?
Thanks

Hi all,
Here is a link to software, which can do a dump of rom image from Tevion http://stubbie.biz/firmback.zip
And here is a link to web page with some instructions how to extact the firmware or ROM for short. http://www.gpsmodding.com/index.php?topic=1886.msg14625#msg14625
Please do it for me and all the people who might brick their devices
Thanks John :mighty

How to make full firmware backup for restoration pack:
1) Download & unpack this: http://stubbie.biz/firmback.zip
2) Copy all 7 files from downloaded archive to your SD card (in any folder).
3) Make sure that your SD card have 1Gb of free space.
4) Run DiskRW.exe utility.
5) Make sure that selected the "Read/Write" tab
6) Make sure that selected the "Read Disc" checkbox !!!
7) Select first drive in "Store:" drop-down list. The disk name should be "DSK1" or "MSFLASH".
LENGTH: I don't know
8 ) Select SDMMC folder in "Output:" (tap [...] button)
9) Tap [Read] button & wait until the process is completed
10) Close DiskRW utility.
11) Run Atlas3_NR.exe utility
12) Select SDMMC folder in middle drop-down list.
13) Tap [Save] button & wait until the process is completed.
14) Close Atlas3_NR utility.
15) Run YFbackup.exe utility
16) Select SDMMC folder in folders list & tap [OK] button.
17) Wait until the process is completed.
On your SD card should appear six files:
DSK1_0_******xx.img (dump user area of internal flash, read through WinAPI, structured)
DSK1_0_******xx.log (DiskRW log file)
Pages.bin (completely raw dump of internal flash. read directly from chip, unstructured)
Spares.bin (block allocation map of intrenal flash, read directly from chip)
YFbackup.pck (compressed image of YFShell app)
YFbackup.pnf (some system information about your device)
Copy these files to your PC & pack into ZIP or RAR archive and upload them to some file hosting services like rapidshare or megaupload and post the link here.
Thank you :mighty

hi all,
unfortunately, the software doesn't work on Tevion, must be different Atlas processor, only DiskRW.exe worked and created nice disk image.
Now, how to extract the ROM, don't know yet but willing to learn.
Tevion 4.3" has got flash disk partitioned into 4 partitions, one about 400Mb is the main disk, anoter is about 22Mb, this must be the ROM, one is about 64Mb, this is its RAM, there is no separate
RAM (very clever people this Chinese) and last bit is something small and I don't know what is that, anybody knows the answer? I will find out it one day.
There was something on xda developers so I am going back to school.
I will post results from time to time so stay tuned. And say something encouraging, please.
Cheers for now

Thanks Wahroonga Farm, it looks like people coming back and reading this stuff.
Latest info:
I've send an email to Tempo Australia, asking for the original firmware, they want $100.00 and no guarantee that they can fix the problem, how good is that?
Told them that other manufacturers provide firmware for free.
I'm still waiting for the the SD card with the ResidentFlash image, from some nice guy, who did the image backup of his working 4.3"
Tevion 4301, it's delay due to Melbourne Cup Day holiday and me being absent for a few days.

I've got the image, it's 512Mb and log file reported that there are 4 partitions, so it is tevion's flashdisk image. Now I have to find the way to extract ROM from this image file. Someone mentioned dumprom.exe, part of itsutils package.

No real progress yet but something is happening.
I looked once, at some rom image in Hexeditor, there was processor name repeated many, many times, so I searched for arm and I did find plenty of it in the first part of the image, I remembered that one partition was 22Mb so I cut it out from the whole image using Hexedit. I've then run
D:\itsme>dumprom -d d:\abcc -4 myimagename.img
('itsme' is a folder with all the utilities to play with pocket devices and 'abcc' is a folder on my PC's d: drive, so the files would be extracted to that folder) and it extracted 196 files and very long printout, when I run just:
D:\itsme>dumprom -4 mydiskimagename.img, I get printout only but it's probably 1000 lines long
and I've got 2 ROMs; "****** hell", an Englishman would say
82000000 - 82000000 L00000000 rom_01 start
8220d3d0 - 8220d3d0 L00000000 rom_01 end
82600000 - 82600000 L00000000 rom_02 start
831937dc - 831937dc L00000000 rom_02 end
I'm doomed and would never finish my project of unbricking my Tevion but I will do as much as it takes
to at least learn something.
I'm attaching the text file, if someone wants to have a look at it and experience mild heart attack.
Have fun

Hi again, nothing to report yet but something is cooking,
Tevion has got 3 part rom and all this 3 parts can be extracted
from the first partition.
I did mention above that I extracted something, I tought was the rom, it was IPL according to romdumptoCF developer and if you run c:\itsutils\dumprom -d c:\out -4(or -5) rom.dump
you get printout and 28 files extracted to c:\out folder
when you run c:\itsutils\dumprom -d c:\out -4 tev_disk.img
(this is the name of the first partition image, 38MB, cut out
using hexeditor, which is part of rom tools from hpcmonex.net)
you get 196 files and printout so altogether we've got 224.
There are smart people out there and they are willing to help me, so fingers crossed.
I may report one day that Tevion is working.

Hi all,
I want to report, that my tevion is working now, thanks to someone from www.buzzdef.net forum, everything is there, nothing was changed, it looks like only operating system and drivers were overwritten with the wrong files.
I've got the images, there are 5 files:
TINYNK.bin
DRIVERS.bin
NK.bin
chain.bin
chain.lst
When you start the boot loader there are 4 updates and it takes a while, maybe 30 tom 40 minutes, so you have to be patient.
If someone bricks his/her 4.3" Tevion 4301 you know, where to find me.
Just leave message here, I will come back with some info, how I hacked my unit.
Now how to add some dll files to the NK.bin, so we don't need to copy them each time, we turn the unit off? Just kidding, I'll wait for a while and enjoy my Tevion GPS.
Kind Regards

Perhaps you mite like to zip up the files and append them to this thread. :)
Hi Wahroonga Farm,
I dont mind doing that, the only problem, is the size, above 7MB.
How do you propose to append them, maybe administrator can come up with some idea, atherwise rapidshare.
Dont forget this is for Tevion 4301 4.3", and has to be passwort protected or something , in case someone might brick his/her 3.5" with it or the nice people from Tempo Australia may try to use it for profit.
Let me know how it could be done and we'll take it from there.
I'm happy again, after the rom was loaded, I started IGO8 and gps was coneccted to satelites in seconds, the only problem I'm facing is the TCPMP media player, is very slow, it take quite some time before the mp4 movi starts, I registered it with regedit, copied all necesary dll files to \windows folder no change, has anybody have anu clues about this problem?

OK people,
The boot files are uploaded to box .net and here is the link:
http://www.box.net/shared/d23lgl04s7
This files are only for 4.3" Aldi Australia TEVION 4301 and this is the original factory ROM extracted from working unit.
This files can be loaded only from SD card, I did use 64MB old SD
formated in FAT, not FAT32, there is a trick to start boot loader,
either research it or ask here if you need to know it, urgently.
This archive contains 5 files, one of them is called Chain.lst,
which can be opened with Notepad and should be opened before flashing, to know what's in it, If there is any file containing BOOT in its name you should delete it from the list and save it with the same extension .lst.
IF YOU UPDATE WRONG BOOTLOADER NOTHING COULD BE DONE
BUT JTAG AND IT CAN BE VERY COSTLY.
It takes about 30 to 40 minutes to load it, so you have to be patient, one day the files my be optimized and the time would be much shorter, maybe 10 to 15 minutes.
IF SOMEONE, WHO BRICKED HIS/HER UNIT, DELETED FILES FROM EITHER RESIDENTFLASH OR DATASTORAGE, THIS ROM WONT RESTORE THEM BECAUSE IT HAS GOT ONLY DRIVERS AND OPERATING SYSTEM IN IT.
IF THE UNIT IS SEMI-BRICKED AND DOESN'T CONNECT VIA ACTIVE SINK YOU CAN USE IT TO REPAIR IT.
If you just want to play with it, just play with NK.bin, this is OS.
One day I might add the necessary dll files to this rom, when I know more.
Just PM me if you desperate or desperado, always willing to help if you want to fix/brick your unit. :-)
john
P.S. I want to say thank you very much to the guy, who uploaded the Flash Disk image and posted me DVD, he lives in Melbourne, in Black Rock, there was another person who changed his mind, after promising to do it, I don't know why, he posted here few times, that's why I approached him, I wont mention any names, and bigest thanks goes to Alex from Romania, who did the extraction, this guy is a genius, one day he will release his program to the public, just final touch-ups.

Hi,
I am trying to add the necesary dll files to the rom, so far no success.
Tevion needs this dll files, aygshel, celib, doclist, gsgetfile, gx, imgdecmp, note_proj and maybe more in windows ce directory, to runl applications better.

To add files to NK.bin file you have to convert it to raw format,
NK.nb0, to do that you have to run some tools in dos prompt,
the tools are part of:
http://www.t-hack.com/wiki/index.php/NK.BIN_toolset
C:>viewbin nk.bin
ViewBin... nk.bin
Image Start = 0x00220000, length = 0x00AC136C
Start address = 0x0023D618
and then:
C:>cvrtbin -r -a 00220000 -l 00ac136c -w 32 nk.bin
These arn't the Tevion adreses, they are from here:
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms913889.aspx
It doesn't work for me, I mean cvrtbin.exe
There is another way:
You get yourself, 1st partition image, cut out of the whole 505MB it is about 38MB in size, 19007 sectors times 2048 bytes and then look for ECEC in ASCII format in hexeditor, there should be three of them, in Tevions case:
1st at 81c00040 jump to kernel starts at 81c00000 and ends at 81c0004c
2nd at 82000040 rom01 starts at 82000000 and ends at 8220d3d0
3rd at 82600040 rom02 starts at 82600000 and ends at 831937dc
Did you notice that all three start 0x40 after image start?
To get the NK.nbo we are using the third image,we are going to third image start address and cut everything before 82600000 and then cut everything after 831937dc, what is left we save as NK.nb0
When you substract end addres from strart address you gonna get image size which is:0x00b937dc = 12138460bytes.
Next lesson when I'm ready.
johnhajter
28th November 2009, 03:26 PM
Hi,
next you should use romdumpx.exe,
There is a manual which is a part of the romtoolpack
http://hpcmonex.net/nec900/files/releases/romtoolpack.zip
and is called 'Beginners ROM mod.doc', it looks simple but doesnt work on this NK.nb0, we've just created in previous lesson, is missing loading ofset.
I have to do more reserch, I think we have to add something to this image, some kind of romheader, which would have the loading addres in it and some other details, maybe cut and paste from NK.bin. I'll be back.
johnhajter
1st December 2009, 08:57 PM
Hi all,
we've got a progress, we are using the raw image to add these
dll files to it, so we cut it out from the firs partition, how we do that?
We are looking for the magical ECEC in ASCII format in hexeditor,
apparently the ones of interest are left aligned, if you've never opened binary image in hexeditor, it looks like this:
00000000 4230 3030 4646 A000 0008 8400 38B9 0000 B000FF.....(....
this is first 16 bytes of rom, so if you are looking for left aligned ECEC in ASCII format it should be in place of B000 after the hex
values , in tevion's case it's the third left aligned one, then we moving cursor back 0x40 to the beginning of the image and cut everything before that.
The length we know from previous calculations 8260000 should be subtracted from end address 831937DC and we cut after that: 0x00b937dc = 12138460bytes, just type it in hexeditor, hit enter and it'll take you there, saved it as nk.nb0
Next I run xipbin on it:
d:\itsme\xipbin nk.nb0 0 nk.bin 82600000
0 is the start address of the nk.nb0 and the 82600000 is the loading address, xipbin.exe takes care of all the calculations to create flashable file, I've just edited the length, using the values from original NK.bin, they are represented in the first line of the rom bytes 12,13 14 and 15. Each byt is 2 characters long
first line has got 32 characters representing 16 bytes, from above example it is 00 38 B9 00, this valu is called big endian and to get the size you have to convert it to little endian, which is just reading from the end byte to the beginning, without changing positions of the characters in the byte so it should read 00 B9 38 00, remember the zeros, if you convert it do decimal value you get 12,138,496 bytes, yes it is very small rom
or rather OS.
I loaded it in my tevion together with all other files and Tevion is working, an I just recreated my first NK.bin file.
I'll try copying the dlls tomorrow and let you know as soon as I can.
One last thing, the changes, which I've done to registry were not affected by rom loading, so there must be some other way to reset it to factory setting and I don't know how to do it.
Cheers john

Might there a be a way of cracking open the GPS to locate manufacturer?
Hi Nicko,
Done it, nothing there, very primitive finish, some copper sticky tape all around to hold things together, battery glued by double sided sticky tape, I was struggling to get it off, of the board, only 1100mA.
Replaced it with mio 520 battery 1450mA, from Hong Kong long time ago and doubled the battery life to two hours with no GPS running. I had to replace it because the positive , red wire was pinched during assembly and when Tevion got hot last sommer it shorted out and unit died on me.
When I was putting it together, I've broken some plastic clips,
so I broke the rest off and is much easier to open it now.
There is some print on the back of LCD, the type we get on beer
or coca bottles but much smaller, some kind of date stamp.

Hi again,
the job is done, 7 dll files added successfully.
Using the raw image .nb0 from above, and tevrom folder, I created inside my working folder, called itsme, then I copied 7 dll files to it: AYGSHELL.dll, CELIB.DLL, DocList.dll, gsgetfile.dll, GX.DLL, IMGDECMP.DLL and NOTE_PRJ.DLL, then you run this:
c:\itsme\dumpromx -a tevrom nk.nb0
dumpromx, at this point tels me not enough space to add all files,
what the? -back to school, read manual and it tels you to add zeros at the end of the .nb0 file so I added 345,000 bytes, about 30,000bytes more then the combined size of all dll's.
Dumpromx lists file after file, with added successfully besides it.
Converted it to NK.bin with xipbin NK.nb0 0 NK.bin 82600000
Next thing, is the size, couldn't find any answers so I just added this 345,000 to the size of bytes 12 to 15, remembering the big endian, little endian thing, in decimal full rom is 12,483,496, 0x00BE7BA8 in hex and A8 7B BE 00 in little endian, in the firs line of the file, the original was 12,138,496 bytes.
Loaded it to my beautiful Tevion and its running all the applications, which used to give an error: cannot find the application or one of its components and what is most important all this files are in windows folder.
john
P.S. I used an old 64MB, Motorola MicroSD in SD adapter, formated in fat no fat32.

Hi it's me again,
Just quick update, the rom is running with no problems so far.
Did some changes or rather didn't do the changes to the rom size
after adding 7 .dll files.
After converting this NK.nb0 file to NK.bin using xipbin.exe, the size
of the new NK.bin is 00 BE 7B 84 = 12,483,460 bytes
the original was 00 B9 38 00 = 12,138,496 plus 345,000 bytes = 12,483,496 bytes,
you just have to remove the last 12 bytes from this file because xipbin.exe adds them by default.
Flashed it yesterday and I've got the feeling, that it's a bit faster.
john

8th December 2009, 09:46 AM
Hi again,
all is running smoothly, no problems at all,so the new NK.bin is uploaded as DLLsAdded_NK.rar here:
http://www.box.net/shared/h7h6cx0u9r
If someone wants to update Tevion's OS the old NK.bin hast be substituted with the new one, all other files from the firs upload have to be present on SD card.
WARNING! This files are only for Tevion 4.3" sold last year by Aldi Australia as 4301.
How to download to Tevion - Iam not taking any responsibilities for enything
- copy all the files to formated, in fat16, SD card, put the card in the slot of your 4.3" Tevion, slide switch to off position, press and hold menu button located on top of the unit, slide the switch back ton on position, don't release the menu button till you get white screen, you can release the menu button now.
The bootloader doesn't give you any options, so there is no turning back, no "Do you want to cancel the update" option.
Be patient and wait for the unit to finish loading everything, about 30 minutes,
there are 4 updates, after update is finished, you should get the usual white screen with big TEVION written on it and then whatever you had on your unit before the update.
The update doesn't change registry settings at all.
If for some reason the update finishes with "4/4 updates updated successfully" and 100% progress bar and nothing happens, dont panic, just reset the slider at the back to off and then to on position and all would be OK, I did experience it once, when I was playing with different versions.
Enjoy

Hi again,
latest information:
I added 8 .dll files now and replaced gx.dll 9kB with one from GAPI for HPC 169kB, I added about 600kB of zeros to the NK.nb0 file,
dumpromx accepted them all but when I converted this file to NK.bin and loaded it to Tevion, it was just sitting on 99% downloading images, when I restarted the unit it just loaded like normal, which was big surprise to me, but the new files were not loaded. I did upload the file to my Guru and he converted it for me,
when I loaded it, it loaded with lightning speed, maybe 10 to 15 minutes and the new files are in windows folder.
There is one problem thou, when I start TCPMP media player it tels me that the GAPI driver is not installed, it takes a while to cancel this because it pops up a few times unless you select GAPI Emulator, when you've got GAPI installed.
I'll report later how it works, speed and behavior.

Hi again,
all is working OK, so far.
The issue with TCPMP media player, I had was due to GAPI driver, which was selected in options of the player itself, so nothing to worry about.
The next thing, I've mentioned before, was very slow response of the TCPMP media player, when I reinstalled it from .cab file, everything is good again, only soft reset deletes some files from windows, maybe they should be added to rom, I have to find out, which ones.
I am running igo8.0 version, with TTS, no problems here, igo8.3 version is a bit slow,it looks like screen is updating every half a second or so, the igo8.4 Amigo version is even slower.
I am getting notifications from Box .net that the files are getting downloaded, maybe I should add some manual to these files with warning and instructions, how to use it.

I asked someone at gpspassion, how many files can be added to NK.bin and look at this answer:
"Regarding max NK.bin:

Length=00B937DC
MaxLength=01B00000
Order=0003
Flags=0001
Version=00000000

AlgoFlags=00000000
KeyLen=00000000
the interesting parameter is: MaxLength=01B00000 (28,311,552 bytes) - used only 12,138,460 bytes ... is HUGE memory ..."

What do you say about that?

Hi all nice people,
I was thinking about Christmas surprise but unfortunately, there is not enough time to finish this project, I'm planning; adding support for bigger SD card, my friend's MIO C520 accepts 8GB.
Why Tevion wouldn't.
I have to learn about dlls relocations first, because, we don't have this dlls in our windows directory and you cannot put extracted ons, they wouldn't work, they were designed for particular rom.
Sorry for that and Merry Christmas to all of you here.

Hi all and Happy New Year,
I didn't have much time to work on my new project,
I did find some registry setting, they didn't inprove anything.
I am learning this .dll relocation thing, I've dumped all the necesary dll files from my other GPS, which does support 16GB
SD cards, just need the time.

Hi all,
I compared Tevion's registry to HP IPAQ 312 regarding SD drivers and any entries related to SD memory, they are identical.
Must be the drivers themselves.
I just got myself a 65 page manual from Microsoft on dll relocation
so I'll be back maybe next year at the same time :-)
Someone posted some dll drivers, patched for ce 5.0 from windows mobile but they don't work, link here:
http://www.hpcfactor.com/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=14769&posts=4&start=1
maybe mine is corrupted and will work on somebody elses Tevion.

Hi all,
I'm getting notifications from Box.net, that the files are being downloaded, all the time, maybe someone, who downloads them, can write something here, to tell us why is downloading them?
It would be very nice to know, is it because of the extra dlls or there is more serious reason?

Hi everybody,
Nothing new to report on over 2GB SD support but I'm working on it, it is very easy to add files to ROM but hard to delete them.
I was trying to replace SDHC.dll, SDMEMORY.dll and SDBUS.dll, with ones from devices, supporting more than 2GB but the original files getting just renamed, not deleted and I'm getting problems when downloading them back to tevion.
I did find software, which is capable of deleting modules from
roms, it's calld XIPPort, just have to learn how to use it.
I will report latter.

Hi again,
First attempt didn't work, something must be wrong, because I cannot
download files to tevion after I replace SDBUS.dll, SDHC.dll and SDMEMORY.dll.
XIPPort deletes these files very nicely, so there is no trace of them anymore.
This three files are not just files, they are modules, which are more complicated
and maybe there has to be different approach.
I will try some more things.

I haven't given it up yet, I was busy packing my staff, because I have to move out, but as soon as I settle down in new place, I will continue my struggle.
Someone asked me for help on semi-bricked Binatone, so he might drop message or two here, please don't get upset :-)

Wot? The entire project?
John, you deserve a medal or three.
Not the entire project just the 4GB support for now,
I'll be looking for solutions, I am not retiring yet.
