Hi Guys,
Ive got a garmin etrex vista hcx and i recently installed mapsource, shonky maps, osm, contours all successfully and they work well on my garmin.
I wanted to install openMTBmaps as well. Ive followed the instructions and ive downloaded mapsetoolkit ( i forget the name as im at work now) but im totally stuck. Ive look for threads on this but cannot find it.
I originally tried opening the openMTBmap file and this then caused mapsource to crash so i had to uninstall that file to get mapsource to work again which is fine. I was directed to mapsettoolkit but now im lost. I have no idea what im doing.
Any ideas?
cheers

Hi, The latest updates for MTB Australia is a bit corrupted. You would be best to wait for the next release which should be anytime from now. That's why it's crashing in Mapsource.
The easiest method I have found to install MTB Australia is.
First step obviously is to download the MTB Australia File.
Once that is downloaded, you need to decompress the file, DO NOT use the built in program on Windows. You must use 7zip to decompress the file.
Go into the folder that's just been decompressed, You now have a couple of option's. From here you can create a .img file or install into Mapsource, or like me do both.
To install into Mapsource, in the folder there are some MS Dos Batch Files. These Batch files are what you need to create the maps.
There's 3 options for installing into Mapsource. The 3 options I like to use are either,
"install_with_classic_typfile"
"install_with_thin_typfile"
"install_with_wide_typfile"
I chosen to use "install with thin typfile" Double click on it, than a dos program will open, Click on enter on your keyboard, than click on enter again. Now open Mapsource and select the MTB map.
You can also create a .img file for your Garmin GPS unit if you wish not to install the maps from Mapsource onto your GPS.
In the folder, there's another Batch File called "create_gmapsupp.img"
Double click on it, a dos program will open, you have 3 option's I chosen number 1. than press enter on your keyboard, and press enter again after the .img file is created. Simply follow the instructions on the dos program.
You should now have a "gmapsupp.img" file in the folder. Simply add this file into a MicroSD card inside a folder called "garmin" and select the map in the map menu. If you own a Garmin Oregon you can change the name of the *.img file. I don't know if this feature is available on your GPS.

The current update (19.03.2010) work's on my Garmin Oregon after I created the .img file. I hear that if you zoom into Bunbury near Perth the roads disappear, apart from that I have not had any problems with this map update.

I should have the current updated version as i only downloaded it a couple of days ago. Not going to bunbury so that shouldnt be an issue.
I'll try this out when i get home, should i have any issues I'll be back on here!
Im afraid my girlfriend is becoming a gps widow..
