Jrt-42?

Looking at bluetooth gps on eBay today and saw a person with a number of listings for a JRT-42 42 channel BT gps but there is no notation as to what the manufacturer is and I can't find any info on it on the web.

Has anyone ever heard of it? Any spec's, reviews etc?

The price and spec's provided on eBay seem a little too good to be true, and the general rule with eBay is, if it seems too good it probably is :)

This is a Nemerix III chipset based GPS. The model JRT-42 is a model "made up" by the ebayer or their supplier. The actual model is BT-518. The manufacturer is mainland China and the reason why nothing appears in Google is because their web site is all in Chinese. The manufacturer is as follows:

The price is below cost from factory, so, not sure why it was sold so cheaply.

There is also a 44 Channel GPS engine but is also similar spec to SiRF III, Nemerix III and MTK32.

seems most of the details on the BT-518 are in chinese as well. Most references I can find to that are for a usb hub :)

Do you know anything about them? Good, bad or indifferent?

The Nemerix has been a mediocre GPS engine in the past, however, MTK32 came out of the blue and proved itself immediately as better than SiRF III. Specifications wise looks good, manufacturing quality of that brand is unknown. I abstain at the moment onthis one. The final concern would be warranty.

As Nicko said, the chipset inside the GPSr is a good one, great performance, low battery drain etc, but even the best chipset is useless if the manufacturer can't assemble a decent quality system around it.
Having said that - I have not heard a single complaint about any ebay-sourced chinese GPSrs, so odds are it'll work fine.
Don't expect much after sales service or warranty, but hopefuly you wouldn't need it anyway.

Well, I bought one on eBay on thursday, so should be there as soon as I get a chance to check the post box. We'll see if it's any good, with the caveat that I've got no GPS experiece.

As soon as I've got it I'll take a couple of photo's. If it interfaces with (or I can manage it anyway ;) ) the nokia N91 I've got I'll show that too. I'm not one for ripping apart new electronics though, so there'll be no shots of the inards :)

OK, so after a lengthy delay in the post (I thought I'd been ripped off ;) ) the "JRT-42" has arived. USB charging is great. Bluetooth connected straight away and the GPS light, which I'm assuming means it's talking to a satellite, lit up as soon as it turned on. Seems reasonably well made. Base is a non-slip rubber type material and the rest is the usual semi-transparent hard plastic. There is an extra port for what appears to be an external aerial, but as I said above, I've got no GPS experience, so I could be wrong.

It's still charging, so I haven't got a lot of photo's but here are a couple. First is the unit plugged in and linked to bluetooth

Excuse the quality of the photo's. The location wasn't exactly great (my bed ;) ) and the camera isn't hot either :sorry I'll get some more photo's up soon. I want to take the back cover off and show the battery etc. but that'll have to wait until I'm happy the battery is charged (no instructions with unit, gotta love eBay :mixed-smi )

I appologise to the seller and eBay. I found the manual ;). It happily works with Ozi trial version with the world map, getting 8 satellites from my bed room with no trouble (about 1-2 metres from a largish sliding window). Not too bad :)

And it appears that it should be correctly called a JRT-29 which appears on the web in a few places.
