View Full Version : Car PC & GPS & Reversing Camera, and a new UHF

My weekend has been heaps of fun!!! :butt
Have finished mounting a Car PC with a 7" motorised in-dash LCD touch-screen monitor into my dashboard. Both the Car PC and the monitor are single din sized units. Positioned the GPS reciever on the passenger side dashboard, right underneath the rego sticker. Programmed the CarPC to always start OziExplorer automatically in moving map mode with the speed & red light camera waypoint file displayed. No more carting the notebook computer around on trips for me!!!
Had to buy a new UHF to make everything fit. I used to have a Uniden GPS105, dual GPS & UHF in the dash, but with the demand for din slots, it had to find a new home. Replaced it with a Uniden UH089SX compact unit, which just happened to fit perfectly into a slot in the centre console.
The LCD monitor also has inputs for video, so I installed a reversing camera. Thought for a while about the best place to put it. Decided to bore a hole in the top brake lamp and place it inside - up high looking downwards and perfectly placed within the arc of the rear windscreen wiper for when the camera would be covered in mud. I did have to paint over part of the camera - the LED nightvision lights destroyed the picture when their beams hit the window. The nightvision on it was useless anyway, and the light from the tail lamps and reverse lights is plenty for the camera.
The best thing about all this is that it has all worked first time - YAY!!! :yesmstr

Droopy,
Does the monitor have a VGA input as well? If so, what brand is it (and what brand is the carPC).
Thanks

Looks like just a DVD/media player but may run some form of Windows in the background. I couldn't see where this is stated. I did note that the screen size is just 3.5". This is the same size as your average Pocket PC screen which will run OziexplorerCE. (but usually do not have AM/FM radios or inputs for reversing cameras)

No because of a few things, that being no input device capability (for keyboard mouse), does not have touch screen and is not CE device. It doesn't have memory storage for programs and is practically just a DVD player.

It has them to play MP3 music and play DVD. It reads the data from the datacrads etc and immediately plays them.

Droopy this is exactly the set up I want in my Pajero. At the moment I am using pocket pc's with Ozi CE and also have Ozi on my laptop.
As great as I find the Pocket PC it does have limitations with the screen size and tends to bounce arround on its mount and once the whole thing fell off the window, despite being a RAM Mount.
If you would not mind supplying me the details of the components you used and where you sourced them from I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks
Mick

Let me know how you go I have the same but with only a 1GB sd card.
I have just hooked up a camera for the car and also one for the caravan, the CCD camera is fine but the CMOS one was too dark to use so we are upgrading that.
Question when you plug a device into the AV slot do you get a slight buzzing from the screen?
Next I want to run OZi explorer so I will be intersted in how you go.

maybe a inline filter between the device and the VGA plug might help remove the interference.

Yes good suggestion before I do that I will try something else to see if the interfernce is a constant.
I had a quick look in the shop is that something you carry or do i have to go to Dick Smith or Tandy?

It would be something like the filters used for car radios to cut out noise from the alternator. All it is is a capacitor in a sealed casing. You solder one end to the positive and the other end to chasis but remember to check the polarity of the capacitor, positive to positive. DSE are the ones or Jaycar. Jaycar are on Newcastle st in Northbridge, I think.

When you said inline I thought it would be something that was connected to the cabling between the devices.
I think my car would already be covered in that regard but I will check with the auto electrician I used.
thanks

The only other possibilty is stray electromagnetic emissions, meaning does not conform to FCC, CE or C-Tick, thus may not be curable.

I know others who have used pocket pcs like you speak of, and they seem to be quite happy with their setup.
With the electrical noise interference, i haven't come across any significant noise with my setup. I've used cable conduit with all wires through the engine bay, and run them from the battery all the way along the side wall to the grommet. The closest they get to the alternator is at the battery.

I am after car PC for running oziexplorer. Has anyone heard of a DIN mounted device that includes both screen and PC, maybe with USB port for inputing maps, waypoints, etc. I am trying to avoid need to run separate PC with in-dash screen.

Single or double DIN?
OziCol
30th October 2007, 12:06 PM
Someone has told me that one exists - double DIN - but if there is a single DIN available, I would look at it. Double DIN sounds more likely given space required for screen - not sure if it will have/need the motorised /fold away screen.
