Hi Everybody,

Thanks to the threads on GPS Australia relating to OSM I have now started to map our local region, Coffs Harbour. So far I have been using Potlatch to convert the tracks which is a bit limited in what can be done on the screen.
I have recently purchased an Explorist 500 (my first GPS) and I am learning how to operate it. When the big wet finishes I am going to start travelling a bit further afield to map a lot of the forest trails that abound around here.
I have just downloaded JOSM and I will have to start learning how to manipulate my tracks using JOSM.

Again, thanks for all of the input from members of this forum that has made my start into GPS a lot easier.

Regards

Good work Mausgrass.
Stick with JOSM. It's really the only way to go.
I'll be looking out for your fine work!

Hi, I mapped my suburb (Eltham Victoria) using Potlatch. It took a bit of playing, but I taught myself the the system and once started it was simple to fill it in. I used the satellite photos and my local knowledge and did most of my area in about two hours. I named the major streets and some of the minor. I have been careful not to use the street directory to fill in names - as that is copyright infringement. I note names when walking my dogs and fill in the names from memory. A lot of the streets do not have names yet, but at least they appear on the map. The results appeared the following Saturday evening. Openstreetmap updates sometime Friday night European time. I had a look at Google maps for the area and they have streets that do not exist and show streets as complete when I know there are barriers blocking access. Local knowledge is a wonderful thing in this endeavour.

JOSM did not work well for me, but everyone is different.

:)
