Bought a MIO C 520 for my wife just before xmas and we had nothing but trouble with it. It would be working OK and then it would say "GPS Signal Lost" and then "GPS Disconnected". If you turned it off for 30 minutes it might work but then the same problem would happen.

Returned it and they sent it away for repairs which apparentky was nothing more than reloading the software. The problem was still happening and we gave it one last chance on a 3 hour trip we did and it deided to work perfectly.

After a few days the screen would start freezing, which restarting would fix. Eventually it would freeze from startup and then to turn it off required holding the start button for 10 secs before it would turn off.

Back we went and it was swapped for a new one, so we'll see how we go.

I do geocaching and the coords are in Degrees and minutes whereas the MIO has the coords in decimal degrees.

Is there a way to change the default for the MIO?

I would be interested to hear of others experiences with MIO as from what I've heard our experience is very unusual.

Cheers

Glenn

Sounds like you got a few faulty ones, my old man got is a few months ago and has used it to drive interstate and do a few local state trips and its been fine.

Not sure about changing inputs for geo stuff as it hasnt been used for that so havent really checked it out.

Hi Glenn,

First of all, you should unlock your Mio C520 which will allow you access to the WinCE operating system and then will allow you to install a program called BeelineGPS which was written for geocaching.

Thanks for that. Given the problems we had with the original unit I think it will be a while before my wife lets me at her Mio. Although if it means not taking the laptop when we go geocaching that could swing the deal.

the c520's are prone to overheating if you leave it on the dash in sun etc - causing all sorts of weird errors ... so while out caching be sure to cover it etc.
Unlock it and use beeline for caching - it's incredibly easy with miopocket etc.
the software manual doesn't mention an option to convert the format of GPS co-ords... but it's probably a setting in the sys.txt somewhere - i'd recommend searching gpspassion for it.

It's my wife's and she looks after it pretty well.

I've got a Triton 400 for geocaching, but thats another lot of problems.

Mio does not have an official policy for unlocking etc - but due to the menu system being in the ROM they don't care. The unlocking procedure. even when done via internal memory is fully reversible. A "Hard" reset restores the factory default settings etc for the menu. The only thing you risk is losing the map/navigation software. This is backed up on the DVD that comes with the unit. The unit is detected as a portable HDD by a PC when plugged into USB so you can drag and drop the software back to the unit.

I know of one case where the user was running a hacked miomap software, skinned, miopocket etc and it crashed.. he lost the dvd for the original software. It was returned to mio and fixed free of charge... but there is no official policy on it. Generally they don't care as it's just hard resetting and then using the mio software to restore the nav software.

Hi can anyone tell me how to repair the CMOS on my c520. I am sick of those indians at the call centre. I have to wait 30 to 60 minutes on the phone just to me stuffed around by them. It wont boot up after they told me to download something to repair a faulty map loader. Help please :mighty

Is there still the update on the www.mio-tech.com.au website.. after a quick check I don't think there is.
check out mio belgiums site - they had a soft update on there for a while for the c520....
I'm guessing you no longer have the original DVD which has the software backup on it?
