Has anyone had any experience with satellite tracking systems, I have a friend who is a member of a volunteer sea rescue group and they are looking for a way to track their rescue boat when it is out on rescue jobs.
Any tips would be appreciated

Yep, done a bit of this sort of thing.

Have a look at the APRS protocol - it's a system ham radio operators use to track things. It's very versatile, and you can buy interface units that sit between your 2 way radio and GPS for about US$40.
I've designed my own systems that do a very similar thing, but for something like tracking your boat, APRS does exactly what you want.
