I know what you mean. I ran a 14/48 for a while but found the 14/50 just that much better up steep hills.
The biggest difference I found was getting the suspension done by Terry Hay. Couldn't tell you what exactly it's doing different but the confidence level and speed, especially down rocky hills has sky rocketed.

Hi Boys

I have a XR600 98 model, great grunt but to heavy.......

Looking at either KTM EXC 450
Husaberg FE550

I am heading towards the Husaberg, I think I prefer the riding position on the Husaberg plus the extra 3ltr sub tank you can put in..... + 105KG..

Do you guys have any advice? all three are around the 12-13k mark.

You can buy my WR for $6500!

I would go with the Husaberg myself though the 525's are fantastic if you get the suspension fixed by Terry Hay.

Gday Bernie,
I dont think you can go too far wrong with any of your choices there mate. They're all top bikes that have a bucket load more power than the XR, handle heaps better and are nearly 20kg lighter.
You will be extremely happy with what ever you choose. I came of a Yamaha 426 and think that the 525 is in a different league, it feels like I'm ******** riding the KTM everything is just so easy especially those steep hill climbs that seem to go on forever..
Saying that I have had the opportunity to go for a ride on a few 2 strokes recently. A TM250 was a magic bike but a little to highly strung for an enduro bike, it's more of a out and out race bike. A KTM250EXC which I wasn't all that impressed about....... except when I see the owner hitting 3rd gear powerband down an extremely rocky hill screaming YIPPPPPEEEEE! as he goes by me. And Craigus' Husky which pulls uphills like a four stroke and weaves in and out of the tight snotty stuff like a 125cc 2stroke, the best of both worlds in my opinion.
