Hi all,
I thought I would get the intro bit out of the way and start wandering through the site's posts.
While we are not new to GPS units as such, we have used an E-trex as backup for our paper maps, we are new to city navigator type systems and PCs running moving maps and that is where we will be looking forward to gaining information from other members on this site.

At the moment our equipment is the E-trex, Roadangel Navigator 7000 and an ASUS 701, part of my searching through this site will be to see if the E-trex and ASUS can be connected to run moving maps.

Looking forward to contributing to the site where we can.
Cheers,
Wayne & Sally.

Hi Wayne & Sally

Welcome to the forums :hatoff
Did you get Mapsource (Trip & Waypoint Manger) with the E-trex?
Have you loaded it on to the lappy?
If you go to the Garmin website:
http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=575
& download & install Nroute to the lappy, it wll give you moving map.
The basemap in Mapsource is pretty useless so you must either:
1. Download ShonkyMap from:
http://www.gpsaustralia.net/forums/showthread.php?t=2525
2. Buy OzTopo:

Buy a Garmin map product:
http://www.octapc.com.au/category143_1.htm

Another different option is to buy OziExplorer:

Do a good long search thru these forums to get as much info as pos before you decide on anything.

Hi Michael,
Thank you for your welcome, it's always tough doing a first up post on a new forum.
In answer to your questions......
No, the E-trex was only a back up to our paper maps and came with no other software and was used as a "we are here" device.
No, the ASUS 701 is Linux based and a possible starting point for us into the world of moving maps..... and part of the reason for joining this forum. Originally the 701 was to be used as a platform for picture storage and transfers to flash drive storage when away on trips. We liked it because of its smaller physical size.
Many thanks for the links, we will certainly be looking though them.

Cheers,
Wayne & Sally.
