Pfranc (http://pfranc.com/) offer plugs for Garmin units on a pledge system, usually around $15 a pair. I have a couple of their plugs and they seem to be of better quality than the ones fitted to OEM cables.
Grab an old serial mouse, a random phone charger from Disk Smith's bargain bin and a soldering iron, and you've got a very cheap power/data setup for less than $10.

You can also get them for the same price from gpsoz (http://www.gpsoz.com.au/) using the pledge system. They are just a resaler for Pfranc. I did the same as you festy but I just made 3 of them. 1 for the pc, 1 for the Palm to the pc and a data/power for the Palm/gps. Just don't know why anyone would go and buy one when it is so easy to make one :D

Remember you can buy them here at GPS Australia for around $25 and not disimilar to the geniune article, meaning it's moulded for improved durability.
