Hi all
I got a Leadtek BT GPS receiver for Christmas, so I decided to set it all up on my FZ1 motorbike. We already had a PDA (Asus A620BT), so all I had to do was mount it, and preferably power it.
Got an Arkon Bicycle Handlebar mount (picture here (http://www.arkon.com/cm/cm900/thumb/cm927.jpg)), which although states 'not designed for motorcycle use', seems to work well. Also purchased a car charger cable for the PDA. Now all I had to do was install a 12V cigarette socket on the bike!
Did this using an 'under the dash' socket kit (picture here (http://www.jaycar.com.au/products_uploaded/productLarge_2398.jpg)), which I wired directly to the bike battery (with an inline fuse), and attached to my inner fairing.
With the GPS receiver in my jacket pocket, all works well. However, I'd like to mount the receiver somewhere as well - I was thinking of either another handlebar mount, or attaching it also to my inner fairing somehow.
I have a Chatterbox system, and will connect the PDA audio output, so I can hear the spoken warnings. (I can also listen to music on the PDA :) ) However, the Chatterbox headset is currently stuffed, so have to buy a new one.
All fairly simple, all fairly cheap, and all works nicely.
(I'd provide pics, but my camera is currenly stuffed, too, so no can do at the moment).

How did you go about wiring and mounting the 12v power adapter?
Thinking of doing a similair thing for my bike but don`t have any fairing to mount anything to.

I think thats what the PDA connection is for. very easy to have a couple of gig of MP3s on an memory card.

Thought I would show a picture of my setup :soapbox
Tankbag setup with HP PDA rx5965 GPS using TOMTOM & OziExplorer & Mobile held in place with a foam mat cut out to take the phone & Pda and hold them snug. 12v supply cable runs out to 12v socket installed on Handlebar.

This setup has been working well except for one or two issues.
- Unit get to hot and shuts down after say 35 DegC as it gets no air, could vent bit it's not waterproof. :swim
- also unit is hard to see and use while riding.
I have been thinking about the TOMTOM Rider as I love the tomtom part, or the Garmin Zumo.
Does anybody know if I can load OziCE on either as with my PDA? Iv'e done some searching but not finding much, I'm not the only one who wants this combination on a Motorbike am I? :sick3

You cannot put anything on either unles designed specifically for them; so no, you can't put OziCE on them. Maybe wait until the TwoNav Aventura comes out.

Well I tried out the software :blah
Maybe because it's different or something however I have decided at this stage that I'll stick to my current system.
I am looking at putting it in an otterbox 1900 and see if it still gets to hot :hot: as the waterproof :sailing: part should be ok.
Anybody got an otterbox with a gps in it on a motorbike :wave ?

Anyone got info on the vibration effect on GPS's with bikes?

All I can say is this:
I use a garmin Geko 301 on it's original Garmin support and a Mio168 Digiwalker in an Otterbox for about 5 years now.
No problems regarding damage, no problems using them........
(apart from keeping your eyes on the road !! :hysterica )

I use a Garmin GPSMAP76 mounted on the Garmin OEM handlebar mount. I've also added a 12V socket behind my headlight cover.
The unit is totaly waterproof, never had a problem running it in the pooring rain. Vibrations have not been an issue.
I ride a dirtbike over some rough terrain & this little unit has performed flawlessly.
I was worried of shaking it off it"s mount but the way that the power cable plugs & locks into the reciever would hold it up if it was to be rattled free.

I`ve just been logging a track for a charity dirt bike ride , and the mount that I used for my Garmin Emap was made from a 4-5mm cutting board . I cut it ( el cheapo brand made of nylon ) into 7cm*10cm , drilled some holes to it to zippy tie it onto the handle bars , the top edge was placed under the speedo and tied strongly to the underside of the speedo .
The Emap was mounted using sticky velcro . I still used the lanyard just in case it was to come off , even after I had a stack it was still there waiting . I was able , after the days`s ride , to dis****ect it and download the relevant tracks to Mapsource with GPS TopoPlus ...... a bit disappointed at the accuracy , but what else is out there ?
The ride , for those who are interested , is on 22-23 November in northern NSW . If you are interested PM me or look up the info at the "Dalby Moto" website
