    Magellan Explorist Pro 10

    magellen-explorist-pro10.jpg

Magellan are about to release the Magellan Explorist Pro 10, a GIS based product that allows you to collect data with attributes etc. Based exactly on the current Magellan Explorist series it has a 3" screen, so still a bit on the small side. I am pleased to see that it has bluetooth connectivity but the specifications of the 3.2mp camera is so so for a "pro" device. As it has Windows Mobile 6.5 there should be options for anyone to install their own GIS package. Magellan has announced a partnership with Canadian GIS firm Effigis and will be providing their onPOZ software. Not sure if this is included in the $699.

  2. Any idea on the price of the OnPoz software (CE version)? Alas I suspect that it will be beyond the average user but it looks like a nice piece of gear and should compete well with some of the base Trimble units (like the Juno)

At first glance, it looks like a contemporary "replacement" for the old MobileMapper units by Thales Navigation. Although, at a very different price-point.

At only $50 greater than RRP on the eXplorist 710, what's your opinion on this device in comparison (esp. since it has a Windows OS, so presumably much greater capability than simply a dedicated GPSr)? Can it act as a simple GPSr, or does one really need to be into GIS data collection to be considering something like this?

    Cheers,
    Paul.

    Hey Nicko,

Happened across this in my subscribed threads, reminding me to take a closer look. No sign of the eXplorist Pro 10 on the Australian Magellan site (or the Navman site either, for that matter), so I took a look at the U.S. website.

It would appear (at least in the U.S.) that the software is available by download, with authentication required (and only for registered GPSrs). But it appears to be cost-free, so that's a good thing. Here are a couple of links for anyone interested:

    Cheers,
    Paul.
