Quick questions - eTrex Legend

Hi,

I'm about to buy my first GPS to take with me on the dirt bike. After spending a couple hours researching on these forums (loads of great info, ta!), it appears that the eTrex Legend would suit me best - cheap and simple.

A few quick questions I have are:

- Can I back-track to camp using this model?

- Can I map with it and upload the routes and waypoints to Google Earth for viewing? Does it matter if I use OS X? I can boot into XP if I really had to.

- Why do I see 'GPSr' in a few threads? A reoccuring typo, or does the 'r' mean something?

Thanks.

Almost certainly.
Google "mapsource os x" finds many references e.g.

Just semantics. Strictly speaking.
GPS Global Positioning Satellite - we can't have one.
GPSr Global Positioning Satellite receiver.

Compare models here.

G'Day Sandstone

I would hold out for a couple of weeks until the HCx model of the Legend comes out. Going by the specs it will have a better chipset in it to hold a better lock on the sats. It could be a better GPSr for what you want on the bike. Can I also recommend you get a RAM Mount . I have one on my road/trail bike for my GPSr and I'm really, really happy with it.

Cheers guys.

I have a limited budget (hence the choice for the Legend), so how much roughly would you expect the HCx model to retail for?

And yes I was considering a RAM Mount, though they all tend to be around $70. The guy in this thread managed to get by with a $35 mount, but I can't seem to find such a cheap one through the online store.

Nicko would be able to say but at a guess I would think about double the price of the 8MB legend.

Whatever mount you do get make sure you use a lanyard or string and tie the GPSr to some part of the bike. That's just in case the mount breaks or spits out the GPSr from the mount. You don't want to pay a few hundred more for a new GPSr

The Cx and HCx should be exactly the same price as they will be in USA retail shops by the end of the month.
