MioMap2008 UPDATE SOLUTION POSTED

For those of you in Australia that have recently been plagued by the MioMap 20008 firmware and map “UPGRADE”, I have now managed to get MioMap 2008, MioPocket (v.39) and MioMap v 3.3 all operating side by side.
You will need to have done the stupid 2008 Upgrade and you will need to have the original C520 Disk that came with your Mio C520.

DISCLAIMER:
I have taken considerable care in writing up these instructions. However you should be aware that I am no guru where computers are concerned. Therefore I take no responsibilty from any outcome that may result from anyone following these instructions.

WARNING: DO NOT ERASE, DELETE or INTERFERE with the devices FLASH MEMORY. This is a sure way to turn your Mio GPS into a brick!!!

MAKE SURE YOU HAVE READ THIS PROCESS THOROUGHLY BEFORE YOU BEGIN!!

FINALLY IF YOU ARE NOT SURE OF WHAT YOU ARE DOING, I suggest you ring Mio and ask them to let you send it to them to have your device rolled back to before the update.

I shall post below a full description of what I have gleaned from the help of OSPREY, KATO250, mcewendavi and xtyler92.

However you should be aware that the firmware update has stopped some Miopocket apps from functioning. These are the ones that I am aware of so far;

• Games: RUBIK and MASTERMIND

• Apps: VOICE RECORDER (i.e. keeponrecordin.exe), POCKET PICTURE

• The normal minibar keyboard. (the JOTKBD one still works)

As well some of the script files in Mioautorun\ scripts need to be edited.

Apparently no one has managed to get Bluetooth functioning with MioPocket running.

The method for getting MioMap 3.3 running on your now downgraded MIO does not involve transferring any of the BT software nor its media player facilities. However there are apps. in MioPocket that will still let you play mp3 files, video and photo files.

If you want BT you have to do a hard reset with SD card out and use the new MioMap 2008.

WARNING: As you carry out the process described below you may be trying to get MioPocket to boot up and you may get an error message saying “string to long”. This appears in a box with an option in the top right corner for you to select “OK”. You will tap this and nothing will change.

It appears that a registry is trying to load but is faulty. I have found that you have to take out the SD card, put it in your Card Reader attached to your PC. Then navigate to:

\MioAutoRun\Registry\Custom\RegistryBackup.reg and delete this file from your card.

Then you do a HARD CLOSE of your MIO, INSERT SD card in your MIO and then do a HARD RESET.

(You have two little lights in the top left of your c520 case. These show you the state of your closes and resets. HARD means you hold down the ON/OFF button on the top of your Mio for about 5 seconds. The hard off will be indicated by flashing GREEN and HARD RESET by flashing BLUE.)

Now for the step by step procedure.

INSTALLATION STEP 1: Getting MioPocket up after the MioMap 2008 upgrade.

•Download MioPocket_2.0_Release_39.zip from:

http://rapidshare.com/files/1914149..._Release_39.zip

•Use WinRar to unzip and extract it to a new folder on your desktop. I renamed the new folder MP2extractedfiles.

•Create another new folder on your desktop and name it Mantas405A43_AUS

•Then copy these three files from MP2extractedfiles into Mantas405A43_AUS folder....“MioAutoRun.exe, MioAutoRun.mscr and MortScript.exe”

•Then rename MioAutoRun.exe to Auto.exe and MioAutoRun.mscr to Auto.mscr.

Next Step:

•On a freshly formatted SD card, Copy the MioAutoRun folder from the MP2extractedfiles folder.

•Copy the MEDIA folder from MP2extractedfiles onto your SD card.

•Copy the folder Mantas405A43_AUS to your SD card.

You can now place the SD card in your Mio and do a HARD RESET.

Wait and watch. After the blue light flashes release your finger off the reset button, You will see MioMap 2008 boot up after a while and then you will see a screen come up showing the MioPocket files loading. (Be patient. Several screens load with pauses, including a further reboot)

Finally the Vista skin will appear. (I changed the skin to STOPWORD. It seems to work best. I don,t know why!!!)

INSTALLATION STEP TWO: We need to make some changes to MioPocket files to get it to link to the new file structure.

For the purpose of this step by step guide I have chosen to start MIOMAP 2008 with the existing MioMap Button in MioPocket.

Click on the MioMap Icon and you will be given the opportunity to point to the MioMap 2008 exe file in your FLASH DRIVE. Navigate to
My Flash Disk\Program Files\Navman\SmartST_CE\SmartST_CE.exe Highlight SmartST_CE.exe in the right hand panel and hit “OK”

Now when you tap the MioMap icon MioMap 2008 will open. Now we have to edit a script in MioPocket.

Scripts can be edited in NOTEPAD.

The easiest way to do this is to take your SD card and reinsert it into your PC Card Reader. Then navigate to \MioAutoRun\Scripts\ MioMapLauncher.mscr

If you open this file it will open in NOTEPAD. Then edit it to this:

ErrorLevel("off")

#The purpose of this initial script (as with the rest of the initial nav app scripts)
#is to allow the nav app to be un-minimized by clicking again on its MioPocket icon.
#MortScript won't allow a script to be run if it's already running; therefore, this
#script makes a call to a secondary script, then exits, so that it may be called again
#to un-minimize the app, if needed.

#If MioMap is already running, switch to it instead of trying to launch it again
If(WndExists("SmartST_CE"))
Show("SmartST_CE")
Else
nextScript = "MioMapLauncher2.mscr"
#Kill the next script if it is running, since MortScript won't run a script that is already running
If(ScriptProcExists(nextScript))
KillScript(nextScript)
EndIf

#Call another script so that this one can exit, thereby allowing this script
#to be called again in the event of the app being minimized
cwd = SystemPath("ScriptPath")
Run(cwd\nextScript)
EndIf

Then make sure you SAVE it on the SD card!!

(Whilst you have the scripts directory open edit MioAudioPlayer.mscr to this

ErrorLevel("off")
Include("Variables.mscr")
Call Variables_Install
##############

Run( FlashDrive\"Program Files\AudioPlayer\AudioPlayer.exe" )

AND SAVE IT !!

I suggest at this point you check that you now have MioPocket and MioMap 2008 functioning, by inserting the SD card and doing a hard reset. Then take out the SD card and reinsert into PC card reader.

INSTALLATION STEP 3:

•Create a folder on your PC desktop called MioMap33.

•Put your original C520 (MioMap v 3.3) disk in your DVD drive and allow it to boot. Then close the language selection page and use the right click EXPLORE command.

•Locate the MioMap folder in the Install folder and COPY it to your folder on the desktop called MioMap33.

Locate the MAPSfolder on your CD and copy the content to the MAPS folder inside the MioMap file inside MioMap33.

Now we have to obtain some hacked files to allow us access to MioMap v 3.3.

Go to this address (make sure you use Internet Explorer, I had no luck downloading using Firefox)

http://rapidshare.com/files/9998832...0JAN08.rar.html

Download and extract to a folder on your desktop that you have created called Mio33Hacks. To do this you will have to use a password. The password is

http://mioheaven.mywebcommunity.org/

I suggest you highlight and copy/paste the password so that it works!!!

Then replace miomap.exe, miomap.exe.id, license.db and data.zip in the MioMap33 folder on your desktop with the hack versions of these located in the folder Mio33Hacks.

Nearly there!!!

Now copy the folder MioMap33 to the SD card.

Finally put the SD card into your MIO and do a hard reset. ( if you get a string too long error, do as instructed above, and then try again)

MioPocket should boot up. Now we must link an icon to MioMap 3.3.

I chose the iGO icon but you can choose any that is not being used.

As you did previously when you click on your chosen icon you will be given the option of navigating to miomap.exe on your STORAGE CARD in folder MioMap33.

Now you are set.

Play around with choosing MioMap 2008 or MioMap 3.3. and then see if you can help refine this part solution.

Good Luck

I'm excited to do this and have my old version back.
Looks like it will take time so I'll give it a try on the weekend.

I hope it works.

Many thanks.
